One Year Anniversary

Its been a year, take this minute to blow the dust out of your computers :)

On March 11, 2021, Canada marked the one year anniversary of WHO declaring COVID-19 a pandemic. We didn’t realize a year ago how long the path to recovery would take, or what it would look like, but we knew it would change everything. Our work had just begun…

On March 22, 2021, our Folding@Home team, “TEAM Equipe GOC”(Fold The North), will be celebrating our one year anniversary. This team started with just a few friends, mostly GC public servants, chatting online and seeking a way to help. This led to the idea, and to the formation of our folding team.

We wanted to help fight COVID-19. We wanted to contribute in the way we knew best. We needed something to focus on.

As of writing this, there are over 90 members of the team currently contributing their CPU and GPU processing power as part of our Fold the North initiative. This results in real money being spent by those who are contributing – money spent on electricity, internet connections, web hosting and hardware. Thank you for donating your time, your effort and your financial resources to making our efforts a success. Without your support, we would not have been able to accomplish all the amazing things we’ve done and all the communities we’ve reached.

I also want to thank all the people who’ve helped the team in other ways. The people who helped us spread the word, the people who presented with us, the people who helped share ideas and the people who lent their technical skills and gave hours of volunteering and support. Donating your time and passion is a crucial piece that made our team a success. We would be nothing without the people.

To all the others who helped us – all the people I’ve forgotten and to those who helped the helpers – I want to thank you too.

To underscore our team’s success, I want to share some of our year end statistics. We’re currently ranked 427 out of 225,494 teams – an unbelievable accomplishment. Thank you 

Some year-end stats on the team

As of March 15th, 2021. The team has generated:

SSC Agora

The Agora Innovation Network at Shared Services Canada is pleased to invite you to the second Lunch and Learn, brought to you by “FoldTheNorth”! FoldTheNorth is a self-proclaimed ragtag group of public servants (and friends) who are Folding@home to help find a vaccine for Covid19. This Lunch and Learn is open to all public servants across the GOC and friends who wish to get involved.

You may have heard the phrase “protein folding”, but did you know that folding at home is actually a very simple and accessible process? This process is friendly to those who are new to distributed computing projects and even to those who have never heard of folding! All you need to do to help us fight Covid19 is donate your personal computer’s spare power.

During this Lunch and Learn, some members of FoldTheNorth will explain the process and break down some steps to get you started. We will then open the floor up for discussion and to answer any questions that you may have.

Join us to learn how you can help find a vaccine for Covid19! Once again, all are welcome.
